Akureyri Airport is the third main gateway into Iceland, after Keflavik and Reykjavik airports. Akureyri was actually the main air gateway originally, having developed a decent landing strip earlier than anywhere else. Today it has much-upgraded facilities, and handles a certain number of flights from overseas, as well as a healthy domestic network. The airport has a modern terminal with places to eat and drink. It has a single runway, which juts out into the fjord.
