The Akureyri Art Museum aims to promote visual culture and appreciation of art. It is the youngest museum of it’s kind in Iceland and the only one of it’s kind outside of Reykjavik. The museum regularly shows work by some of the most progressive artists in Iceland and abroad. The museum has regular educational programs and special events to educate the public and create interest in modern Icelandic art. The museum opened in 1993 and is only 60 miles from the arctic circle.
