At the northern end of the Jokulsargljufur National Park is the Asbyrgi canyon. This is a large horseshoe-shaped canyon which runs nearly 4km to the south, formed by the Jokulsa a Fjollum river before it shifted its course. Unusually for Iceland, a forest of birch trees can be found at the southern end of the canyon. Eyjan is a rocky outcrop in the middle of the canyon. A number of hiking trails pass through the Asbyrgi canyon, and the ranger station can be found at the northern end.
