The main focus of attention in the Askja region is the immense caldera which sits in the centre. It is 30 miles across and forms a huge dent in the landscape, created by huge volcanic forces not too far in the past (1875 to be exact). You can imagine the size of the explosion when you see the size of the caldera, and imagine the amount of material which was thrown out. In the middle of the caldera is the brilliantly blue Oskjuvatn lake, which is the deepest in Iceland. All tours to the Askja region will focus on the caldera, so you can’t miss it.
