The Askja Region in Iceland’s Interior is an area of natural beauty often missed by the tourists visiting the country due to its relative inaccessibility. The Oskjuleid Route, or Askja Way, passes through the region and all its major attractions. This runs from the Ring Road in the south to Herdubreid mountain. The area is full of lakes, rivers, streams and dunes. It is a volcanic landscape with former lava flows all around. The area is only really accessible from June to September, and even then only with 4WD cars. Be sure to try the spring water as you pass over the Grafarlandaa stream.
