Baejarstadaskogur is a rare sight in Iceland – a forest! This particular forest is of Birch trees, and can be found in the south of the island, in part of the Skaftafell park. These trees, which grow up to 15 metres, have been so successful here that their seeds have been taken to try and introduce elsewhere in Iceland. The forest actually occupies the site of a 14th century farmstead, although the ruins have long since disappeared. There are hiking trails through the forest, but only for the experienced walkers.
