Bær is in the west of Iceland, near to Borgarnes, and it is on of Iceland’s most interesting historical sites. Here one of Iceland’s first monasteries was founded around 1030, but no longer exists today. Bær was also the setting for one of the bloodiest and most costly battles in terms of human life. The battle took place in the Sturlunga period, in 1237 and was between Sturla Sighvatsson from Sauðafell and Þorleifur Þórðarson from Garðar.
