Bakkagerðiskirkja Church is situated in the village of Bakkagerði at the Borgarfjörður-Eystri fjord. The church used to stand at Desjarmýri, but the present building was built and consecrated in 1901. The church’s finest feature is its altarpiece which was painted by Jóhannes Sveinsson Kjarval in 1914 and depicts Christ giving the Sermon on the Mount with the mountains surrounding the local hillock Álfaborg in the background. The piece is one of the artist’s most famous ones, and people stop at the church especially to look at it.
