Barnafossar Waterfall

Barnafossar is located off Route 518 - Hálsasveitarvegur - on the south bank of the river Hvítá. It is close to the interesting cascades Hraunfossar, a series of waterfalls made from a lava field. Barnafossar is another waterfall, meaning ‘waterfall of the children.’ It is a short walk upstream from Hraunfossar, and the short walk is worth the beautiful scenery and natural plant life. The name of the waterfall is said to have come from an accident, where two children fell off a natural bridge over the waterfall to their deaths. The bridge was later destroyed by the children’s mother.
