The Blue Mountain Range is a large area extending from Reykjavik to the Southwestern lowlands. The area was declared to be a nature reserve in 1973 and demonstrates some of the best natural countryside in Iceland. Outdoor activities taking place in the area include hiking, mountain biking and alpine and cross country skiing. The Blue Mountain Area is the most popular places for Reykjavikers to ski since opening as a ski resort in 1982. There are numerous lifts, cross country paths and a lodge.
