Borgarvirki is a strange natural phenomenon in northern Iceland. It sits at the top of a 177-metre high hill overlooking the surroundings, and resembles an ancient fortress. It is however, almost entirely natural. Humans have changed the look of part of the ramparts of stone to suit their own needs centuries ago, and it was also altered as recently as 1949. Borgarvirki was in use for defensive purposes as early as the Saga period. If you visit today, you will be presented with fantastic views and a small information board. It is found on the road between Vesturhop and Vididalur.
