Breid is the westernmost part of Akranes. It used to be a fishing area and the people who lived there used to cover large parts of the ground with salted fish to dry out when the weather was warm. There is a lighthouse which was built in 1918, and was the first concrete one to be built in the whole of Iceland. It has been restored and was opened to the public in 1992. Close to the lighthouse is a monument erected to commemorate 11 lives that were lost at a shipwreck off the coast.
