Breidamerkursandur is a wild sandar area in southern Iceland which is remarkably accessible. A small car park just off Route 1 (Ring Road) is the best place to park and then wander into the valley of the Kviar river, which leads up towards the Kviarjokull glacier. This whole area is a breeding ground for wild animals such as arctic foxes and many bird species. The views across to the mountains and glaciers is quite spectacular from the car park. The area was mentioned in Njal’s Saga.
