Deildartunguhver thermal spring is the largest of its kind in Iceland. The water temperature can be as high as 100ºC, and the spring produces 180 litres of water per second. This thermal energy has been well utilized, and is used to heat houses in Akranes, 64km away and Borgarnes, 34km away. The area around the spring grows a variety of fern which does not grow anywhere else in Iceland. The spring is protected by the government and so remains unspoilt and is an interesting place to visit.
