Egilsstaðir is one of two towns in the municipality of Fljótsdalshérað, which was created in 2004. The town is mostly made of people working in the agricultural industry in the rural area surrounding the town. The town is vibrant in summer, with a summer exhibition every year and an art gallery holding regular exhibitions. The town is popular with tourists, especially in the summer when they come to explore the town and beautiful surrounding area.
