Eiriksstadir is an abandoned farm in the Haukadalur valley in western Iceland, close to the Snaefellsnes peninsula. It is famed because this was once the home of Erik the Red, father of Leifur Eiriksson, who is thought to be the first European to travel to America in the year 1000. Erik the Red later started the Icelandic settlement of Greenland. Today an outline remains of the farm buildings, however a reconstruction has been built. Guides in period dress work here and tell the story of Erik the Red. It is open in the summer months.
