Eyjafjordur is the longest fjord in Iceland, and one of the longest in Europe. It stretches inland from the central north coast of Iceland to the town of Akureyri and its busy port. At its northern end it empties into the Arctic Ocean. All around the fjord are spectacular mountains towering above the waters, and opportunities for outdoor activities such as hiking are abundant. There are a number of smaller villages along both shores, and at the mouth is the island of Hrisey.
