The Fjallabak Nature Reserve is somewhat hidden behind the usual tourist trail of the Ring Road as it passes southern Iceland. Yet this is a wonderful place to visit, and only a short distance from the beaten track. The name Fjallabak literally means ‘behind the mountains’, and this is where you’ll find the Reserve. Within its confines, you’ll find rivers, hot springs, lava fields, mountains, volcanoes and many miles of hiking trails. Sadly the roads are only suitable for 4WD vehicles, however during the summer months there are buses from Reykjavik and other major towns which stop within the reserve at Landmannalaugar.
