Flatey is an island in Breidafjordur, in the west of Iceland. It is easily reached by regular ferry from Stykkisholmur. The island is like a snapshot from the past, with well-preserved historic buildings and an older way of life which is different to the rest of Iceland. It was the site of a former 11th century monastery. Today you can visit the church on the island, which has paintings by the artist Baltasar. There are some accommodations on Flatey in summer. Many tourists choose to take an organised tour.
