Just to the east of Eyrarbakki is the Flói Nature Reserve, which is an important area of marshland alongside the Ölfusá river estuary. Moreover it is an internationally recognised bird sanctuary. Many species migrate here during the May to July months. The bogs and marshes sit on top of an 8000 year old lava field. Attempts were made in the early 20th century to irrigate the area. Today it is possible to hike on a circular route through the reserve during the summer months.
