Incredibly, Gásir was once the largest port in northern Iceland. It was built up as a trading port in medieval times, and is today protected and preserved although largely ruinous. Guided tours of the site are available, which can explain the various parts of the place, and the importance of different buildings. Many archaeological excavations have taken place here. Gásir is open only in July and August, but makes a very interesting diversion when in the Akureyri region.
