Gljufrasteinn used to be the home and place of work of the winner of the 1955 Nobel Prize for Literature, Halldor Laxnes. He and his family lived there for over 50 years, but the house has now been transformed into a museum. Although the house has been left mainly intact as Laxness and his family lived in it there have been several additions. These include a new reception building where multimedia presentations are shown giving information on the author’s life and work. The local countryside, where Laxness walked to gain inspiration, is beautiful for a stroll after visiting the museum.
