Godafoss literally translates to Waterfall of the Gods. It was named after Þorgeir was forced to make a decision on which religion Iceland would take in the year 1000. After choosing Christianity, he walked past the waterfall and tossed his pagan carvings into the water, and the name has stuck ever since. The falls are formed by the river Skjalfandafljot, which carries glacial water. It is possibly Iceland’s most beautiful waterfall. There is a car park just off Route 1 for the falls. It is even possible to stay in the guesthouse alongside the falls, and enjoy the hiking opportunities here.
