One of the higher points in the Skaftafell National Park is the Grimsvotn volcano. It is rather inconveniently located beneath the huge Vatnajokull glacer, and so any heated activity is liable to melt hundreds of thousands of cubic metres of ice and send it gushing downhill towards the coast. This happened as recently as 1996 when Grimsvotn erupted. The subsequent flow of water knocked out bridges on the Ring Road.
