A small church at Grund, south of Akureyri, features an onion-domed roof. It is constructed in a neo-Romanesque style, and was built in 1905 by a local farmer. Despite its remoteness and small stature, it was nevertheless one of Iceland’s most impressive churches 100 years ago. Grund is a Catholic church, dedicated to Laurence the Martyr, and sits on the site of older churches which have now disappeared. Visitors are welcome to look around and inside the church. If it is locked, the local farmhouse has the key.
