Gufuskálar is a small historic settlement around 2km to the west of Hellissandur. It has a number of noteworthy sights, including the Irish Well (Irskibrunnur), with a whales skull forming part of the structure. This was built by Irish monks long before the Norse settlers arrived. On the lava field opposite are the remains of hundreds of stone sheds once used for drying fish. These are known locally as fiskbyrgi, and date from Viking times. Also in the village is the US Loran Station radio mast, which is the tallest structure in Iceland and cant be missed.
