Hafnafjordur is Iceland’s third largest town, yet it hides in the shadow of the capital Reykjavik, which is only 10km to the north and largely linked these days by the expansion of both towns into each other. Hafnafjordur means Harbour Fjord, and gains this name from its natural harbor which has always been the key to its success. It is in fact the oldest trading port in Iceland. Tourists visiting Hafnafjordur have a number of interesting outlets to enjoy, including museums, galleries, shopping centres, restaurants and some nice views. The best time to visit is during the International Viking Festival.
