Hafnarhólmi is a small harbour in the region of Borgarfjörður Eystri near the town of Bakkagerði. It used to be a separate island which was attached to the mainland by a landfill which created the harbour to shelter the fishing vessels belonging to the inhabitants of the village. The attached island is a must-visit for bird enthusiasts, as during the breeding season Kittiwakes, eider ducks, fulmars and puffins can be seen. There is a staircase to the top of the island to aid the view of birdwatchers. The island is closed in May.
