The Hallgrimskirka is a huge church dominating the city centre skyline of Reykjavik. It was designed by Gudjon Samuelsson and was consecrated in 1987 after a forty year period of construction. The exterior caused controversy when it was built as many considered it to be ugly, but it is based on Icelandic basalt rock formation. Inside the building is light and airy and has a gothic feel. The organ is German, and has 5,275 pipes. The building has a viewing deck at the top of the high tower which gives the best view possible over the whole of Reykjavik.
