Heiğmörk became a municipal conservation area in 1950 and was named after a similar area in Norway. It contains a network of gravel roads totalling 18 miles and is managed by the Municipal Forestry Service and is ideal for walkers and joggers or those who enjoy nature. Since 1950 over 4 million trees have been planted, with 26 species of tree represented. There are also 150 species of wild flowers and 30 species of breeding birds in the area. The park is 6 miles from Reykjavik, and is over 2,800 acres.
