Hengifoss Waterfall

Situated close to the town of Egilsstašir, Hengifoss is a 120m waterfall which is hugely picturesque and flows down into a beautiful gorge. The waterfall is accessible by walking from the main road. The walk is of low grade but takes approximately 90 minutes. Close to the first waterfall is a second, smaller one called Litlanesfoss, which lies in a basalt setting. Hengifoss is interesting geologically and proves that Iceland used to be warmer because at the top there are basalt strata and sandstone containing fossilized tree trunks.
