Herdubreid Mountain can be found in the Askja Region of Iceland – deep in the Interior. It stands 1,682m at its summit and has a distinct shape like a lamp shade. The mountain is more commonly known as the Queen of the Desert in Iceland, and has long been associated with the folklore, poetry, writing and art of Iceland’s natives (and visitors for that matter). Naturally Herdubreid is a popular mountain to climb, and there are a number of marked trails and routes. This should only be attempted by skilled climbers with suitable equipment, however. Information is available from the visitors centre in the Herdubreidarlindir Nature Reserve.
