The largest maritime museum in Iceland is the Síldarminjasafniđ, or Herring Era Museum, in Siglufjordur. The town once boasted 10,000 workers in the herring industry, which abruptly stopped in the 1960s when herring stocks disappeared. The museum tells the story of the industry here from 1903. It includes lots of photographs, accounts and stories, and there is a film showing the fishing boats, and salting process, from the 1930s. There is a recreation of the reducing plant, and of harbour life with original boats and equipment. This is a must-see attraction in Siglufjordur. It is open from May to September and has an entrance fee.
