Hitardalur is an ancient inhabited area of Iceland full of folklore and mystery. It is located in the west of the country, and north of the capital Reykjavik. A farm has existed here for centuries, and legend has it that the ogress Hit lived in the cave behind the farm. In 1148 over 70 people were killed in a fire here whilst attending a party, according to one of the many written sources that mention Hitardalur. It is a beautiful place, yet fairly hard to reach.
