Hjalteyri is a coastal town to the north of Akureyri which built itself around the Herring industry in the 19th century. It formed as a small collection of settlers’ houses, but quickly grew as it became an authorized fishing port. It took many years to upgrade the harbour to what it is today, with a strengthened pier. Despite the downturn in the Herring industry in the 1960s, Hjalteyri continued to prosper and today is a pleasant little town with a healthy fishing industry.
