Between Árnes and Stöng, off Route 32, is the beautiful waterfall of Hjálparfoss. The falls are split over two separate flumes as it flows through the Thjorsa Valley. This area is a remnant of the eruptions of Mt. Hekla, and the waterfall itself flows over columns of basalt. The name of the waterfall, roughly translating to ‘Help’, comes from the respite travellers found with the water and lush vegetation here. Hjálparfoss is easily reached by road, and is well signposted.
