Hólar’s Cathedral was consecrated in 1763. It is built of red sandstone from nearby quarries, and is the oldest stone-built church in Iceland. This was originally head of religious affairs in northern Iceland, with a resident bishop, as well as educational facilities. The church interior is full of works of art and other fittings of note, such as a carved font from Greenland. The altar was made in Germany in 1500. The cathedral is open to the public between June and August, and has a visitors centre for information.
