The Hornafjardarfljot River near Höfn is a relatively short but wide river. It receives water from the glacier water flowing in the river Sudurfljot in the Vidbord Valley and also from the Svinafellsjokull glacier. Due to it’s large width the river looks rather like a bay. It now has a bridge across it, but before this was built in 1961 the local people had to ford it by car or on horseback. The bridge, when built, was the second longest in the world and makes part of road number 1 around the edge of Iceland.
