The House of Parliament of Iceland can be found in the heart of its capital – Reykjavik. The building was constructed in 1880-1 by Dane F. Meldahl from Copenhagen. He used dolerite rock, which the city lies upon, as a building material, giving the building its grey appearance. Although parliament has been held here since 1881, there were times when the building was used as the National Library, National Archives, and the National Museum, while their respective buildings were being prepared. The House of Parliament has a lovely garden to its rear. It is open to the public during meetings.
