Hrappsey is an island about five miles to the north east of Sykkisholmur in eastern Iceland. The island has an interesting and long history, with records mentioning its use since at least 1241. It has been used for farming – particularly in the summer months – for a long time. In the 1800s, two farms occupied the island, with many people employed in collecting eider down. There was also a famous printing press here, producing many books and periodicals from the 18th Century. Sadly Hrappsey, and the various ruins it still has, are not accessible to the public.
