Not far from the village of Reykholt is the beautiful waterfall Hraunfossar. Hraunfossar is actually a series of waterfalls formed from several rivulets flowing over a lava field from a volcano which erupted under the glacier Langjökull. The water seems to appear from the rock, as the rock is very porous and so allows the water to gush from under the lava and then fall in cascades over the rest of the unusually shaped rock. To get to Hraunfossar it is necessary to take Route 518 – called Hálsasveitarvegur, on the south bank of the river Hvítá. The cascades can be seen when one reaches the riverbank; they are difficult to spot from the road.
