Hrísey can be found at the mouth of Eyjafjordur on the coast of northern Iceland. It is the country’s second largest offshore island. A community still lives on the island, but it retains a quiet and remote feel to it. Large colonies of breeding birds make Hrisey their home. The fishing industry on the island has largely disappeared now, however it is used as a quarantine station for animals being brought into Iceland by sea. Day trips are possible from towns around Eyjafjordur, such as Akureyri. There are shops and a number of places to stay on the island. A nature reserve occupies the northern part of the island.
