An island in the middle of the river Blönduós is used as a nature reserve. It is known as Hrútey, and is just inland from the Blanda Bridge across the river here. The island is also home to a reforestation process, adding an unusual sight of trees in Iceland. Visitors can walk across a footbridge from the camp site nearby to gain access to the island free of charge.
