Hvalsnes is an isolated church and farm in western Reykjanes. The church used to have it’s own vicarage close by, but this has now been destroyed. The parish of Hvalsnes was abolished in 1811 and united with Utskalar parish, but the church still stands in excellent condition. The original wooden-built church was replaced with stone in 1887, and was consecrated on Christmas day in 1887. In catholic times the church was dedicated to the Holy Mother, St King Olaf and St Catherine. The church’s most interesting feature is a tombstone made by the Rev. Hallgrimur Petursson for his daughter’s grave.
