Hvannadalshnukur is Iceland’s tallest mountain peak. It rises to 2,119m above sea level, and can be found nestled amongst the Vatnajokull glacier. Hvannadalshnukur was a volcano which, in 1362, erupted with such force that it devastated the whole region. Much of the mountain is covered by the glacier today, so you cannot see much of its size. Hvannadalshnukur is Europe’s largest volcano after Mt Etna in Italy. To climb Hvannadalshnukur, make sure you have the best equipment and experience, and head to Sandfell, which is 12km north of Skaftafell.
