Hverfell is a crater on the eastern side of Myvatn Lake in northern Iceland, close to Reykjahlid. It was created 2,500 years ago and forms a symmetrical tephra ring. It measures over 1km across, and 463m above ground. It is a must-see landmark when in the area. Those of you hiking around the lake will come across it. Otherwise it is linked by the road running around the lake. Well-worn tracks run into the crater. Moving away from these can be risky due to the unstable nature of the gravel and rocks.
