Jokulsarlon is the name of a large lagoon in southern Iceland, located just inland from the Ring Road as it passes close to the sea. This is in the Breidamerkursandur region of outstanding scenery (despite the proximity of featureless sandars). The lagoon is famous for the icebergs which float across it, having broken off from the Vatnajokull glacier nearby. These icebergs are usually a blue colour and quit scenic. Surprisingly Jokulsarlon is quite a new feature on the landscape, having formed around 1932 when the glacier started melting. The lagoon is still growing.
