Kaupvangur is an area of moorlands just inland from the town of Vopnafjörður in east Iceland. In the mid-1880’s settlers lived at Kaupvangur, until 1875 when a strong earthquake killed many of the townspeople and encourages others to move away to American and Canada. There is a memorial stone at Vopnafjörður for those who emigrated from Kaupvangur after the earthquake. The area is now visited by tourists who enjoy the scenic landscape and local wildlife.
