A medieval settlement existed at Keldur, near Hvolsvöllur, which today has been partially restored. The turf buildings were closed after earthquake damage in 2000, sadly, but the grounds are still open to wander around. Ingjaldur Höskuldsson, who was a character in Njel’s Saga, once owned the site. A road leads to the Keldur site from Hvolsvöllur, and there’s no charge to wander around.
