Kirkjubaejarklaustur is a small village of less than 200 people on the edge of the Ring Road and Vatnajokull icecap in southern Iceland. It has a petrol station and a small tourist information desk which can advise on local sightseeing. The town also sits on the edge of Europe’s largest recorded lava flow from a single eruption, which occurred in July 1783. Locals mostly refer to the town as Klaustur (Convent), which is less of a mouthful. Bus services pass through the town, and there are many local camp sites and guesthouses.
